Lotus has had a chequered history. Starting with kit cars, they moved on to high-class, high performance cars, while Colin Chapman also started a formula 1 team. This became very competitive and successful, wining several World Championships.
 
The last driver to do so in the Colin Chapman era was Mario Andretti, who became World Champion in 1978, driving the Lotus 79.
